The Top Commentator Game!

Posted by | April 13, 2008 .

I don’t know why I decided to do this today but, I did. I went to John Chow’s blog and left comment after comment until I was the top commentator.  Now I want to see if it gives me a jump in traffic. Of course, some of my comments had more “meat” in them than others. In this case, it is just an experiment. If it proves useful, I will be trying to get to the “top” on other sites. And of course, if I plan to be top commentator, I will also plan to have something of value to say.

Congratulations on getting to the top of the list. Did you complete all of these in one day? That is like writing a whole report. I do think that the top commentator plugin is a great way to get return visitors to your blog.

I wanted to ask you if you ever put a list together of top commentator blogs? Anyhow keep up the great work.

In modern business it is not the crook that is to be feared most, it’s the honest man who doesn’t determine what he could be doing.
Anyone who has lost track of time when using some type of computer knows the propensity to dream, the desire to make dreams come true and the tendency to overlook lunch.

Good that you decided to install the top commentator plugin .The TC plugin is definitely worth having IMHO as it encourages readers to comment in order to get some ‘link juice’ back to their own sites.

Thank you for this blog. That’s all I can say. You most definitely have made this blog into something that’s eye opening and important. You clearly know so much about the subject, you’ve covered so many bases. Great stuff from this part of the internet. Again, thank you for this blog.

Hurry! to top commentator widgets many site I’ve been visiting this is the top suggestions that best drive traffics to your sites and provide back links. Basically you can trace yourself how effective it is. I would be focusing its result on my sites.

I really don’t like the so named work from home guru’s they just screw the newbie’s and make money themselves. There are few people who advise some serious recommendations and it is truly welcomed.

I think your blog and your domain name is cool. I don’t see the point why other people would see it as “unprofessional”. Yes, true enough ideas like this are parasitic however, blogs and blogging are the real definition of the word “freedom”. As long as you aren’t stepping on anyone, I don’t see any problem with using such a nice domain. In fact, names like this are the usually the ones that mostly interests new bloggers and starters. You did a good job. Way to go, keep it up!

NotJC..allow me to copy of what you’re doing. I’ll be surfing along the blogosphere to make some comments here and there in order to build backlink from top commenters, and hopefully bring more traffic to my new blog as well.

  15. [...] few weeks later, my fellow blogger, mr. Not John Chow, did the same experiment, got some backlinks, and later reported he was missing from the Top Commentators list. Mr. Not John [...]

I think I am going to put together a graph showing my traffic rise.

  17. Mark Wilson April 16, 2008 11:40 am

I was thinking about doing that as well. I don’t see a downside, you get the info from the site and get the free advertising of being in the top spot. win win.

I will give a full traffic report soon!

  19. Car345.com April 15, 2008 10:13 am

Let us know about how much traffic you have received from these three blogs.

  20. Not John Chow April 15, 2008 10:28 am

I think we all take ourselves too seriously at times. Not John Chow likes to poke fun at ourselves and at our glorious leader John Chow. JC himself has been to this site and had a good chuckle. As far as domain names, I have several and this is just one. I think there is room for “serious” domains and not so serious ones.

Thanks for the debate, I have enjoyed our discussion.

  21. Jonathan Dave April 15, 2008 8:02 am

Traffic flowing is indeed the best part of this kinda parasitic act. But Mr Not John Chow, it doesn’t matter how many professionals blogs out there listed in the web. I’m clearly stating that the domain name of yours is not professional at all dude. Its something like you seem not to understand at all. Im not throwing any negatives thoughts on you. If web is wild wild west, than you should be trying to be professional dude.

  22. Not John Chow April 15, 2008 6:33 am

    Jonathan,

I admit it is a little parasitic! However, John Chow himself has given me the idea. He is not shy about using slightly questionable ideas to make a buck. After all he is Mr. Black Hat.

Of curse, I think it is all an act to keep the traffic flowing.

Professional? I havn’t found too many blogs that I would call professional. I think blogs and the internet are the wild, wild, west. Anything goes and usually does.

  23. Chip April 15, 2008 4:17 am

Good job, I’ll have to do it again some day. I just want you to let me know if John Chow will decide to take you off the list. I noticed that the first time I became a top commentator on his blog. Anyway, nice idea. I was first, though, ;) hehe

Well, its not like i’m in volcanic anger, but everytime i run in to a blog like this really makes me laugh my ass off. Cutting Mr.John Cow traffic and making a tunnel to your blog. I’m not a supporter of Mr John Chow but for my personal view, this is not professional at all.

Wade, so far I am seeing a steady increase. I think there is a curiosity about the name. That will probably fade with time but, by then maybe I can pick up a few subscribers.

  26. Not John Chow April 14, 2008 6:44 pm

Jonathan Dave, maybe check out some anger management. NJC is just one of my blogs. As such I get more traffic because of the name and I have fun doing it.

  27. Wade April 14, 2008 5:33 pm

To each his own. He has the right to any name. John cow is actually selling his site for 25-50 thousand. So if you hate the name of it so much, buy it and delete it.
I too have done the same thing on popular sites. Some are simple comments, others are much better. You can’t comment perfect every time, there just isn’t enough time or ideas. I was curious if being on the top commentators list would help. I have seen a small increase on some sites, though they don’t get the traffic John Chow does.

Not John Chow !! John Cow !! John Chow !!
What in the world is going on here ! It seems everyone is being a parasite of John Chow. By the way dude, what the hell are u thinking about making such a domain?! Are you really out of idea about NAMES???
Gosh, your web is cool but not the name of it dow~

Actually Suzie, I read Carolines blog on a regular basis. She is smart and gives good advice.

When I started trying to get to the “top” most of my remarks were not high quality. I have since “joined” the conversation. At first I was caught up in the goal of being the top commentator and made the mistake of rushing through and leaving “cheap” comments.

  30. Suzie Cheel April 13, 2008 9:58 pm

There is a very interesting article about this on Caroline Middlebrooks blog, you might find interesting about how not to leave blog comments. http://www.caroline-middlebrook.com/blog/how-not-to-leave-blog-comments/ An interesting read very well written. Commenting for me is also about getting a dicussion going , being part of the blogosphere.

Yeah, I need to cut back on the cheap poats but, I don’t think that John care’s. In the end more competition for top comentator means more traffic.

  32. germz April 13, 2008 12:43 pm

Why don’t ya pay a visit to my blog? Lmao.
Anyway, I’ve seen some of your post and I saw that you double post. Be careful from John banning you.

    germz’s last blog post..Mom, can I get a blog?

  33. Wess Stewart April 13, 2008 10:32 am

That’s an interesting idea. I’d like to know how this works out for you. The only problem I can see as far as if word gets around the internet, would be spammers actually making decent posts (gasp) in order to drive their name to the top of the list, prompting tons of people to click the link and get financially RickRolled.

But yeah, it IS a good idea.
