The Top Commentator Game!

Posted by Not John Chow | April 13, 2008 .

I don’t know why I decided to do this today but, I did. I went to John Chow’s blog and left comment after comment until I was the top commentator.  Now I want to see if it gives me a jump in traffic. Of course, some of my comments had more “meat” in them than others. In this case, it is just an experiment. If it proves useful, I will be trying to get to the “top” on other sites. And of course, if I plan to be top commentator, I will also plan to have something of value to say.

That’s an interesting idea. I’d like to know how this works out for you. The only problem I can see as far as if word gets around the internet, would be spammers actually making decent posts (gasp) in order to drive their name to the top of the list, prompting tons of people to click the link and get financially RickRolled.

But yeah, it IS a good idea.

Why don’t ya pay a visit to my blog? Lmao.
Anyway, I’ve seen some of your post and I saw that you double post. Be careful from John banning you.

Yeah, I need to cut back on the cheap poats but, I don’t think that John care’s. In the end more competition for top comentator means more traffic.

There is a very interesting article about this on Caroline Middlebrooks blog, you might find interesting about how not to leave blog comments. http://www.caroline-middlebrook.com/blog/how-not-to-leave-blog-comments/ An interesting read very well written. Commenting for me is also about getting a dicussion going , being part of the blogosphere.

Actually Suzie, I read Carolines blog on a regular basis. She is smart and gives good advice.

When I started trying to get to the “top” most of my remarks were not high quality. I have since “joined” the conversation. At first I was caught up in the goal of being the top commentator and made the mistake of rushing through and leaving “cheap” comments.

Not John Chow !! John Cow !! John Chow !!
What in the world is going on here ! It seems everyone is being a parasite of John Chow. By the way dude, what the hell are u thinking about making such a domain?! Are you really out of idea about NAMES???
Gosh, your web is cool but not the name of it dow~

To each his own. He has the right to any name. John cow is actually selling his site for 25-50 thousand. So if you hate the name of it so much, buy it and delete it.
I too have done the same thing on popular sites. Some are simple comments, others are much better. You can’t comment perfect every time, there just isn’t enough time or ideas. I was curious if being on the top commentators list would help. I have seen a small increase on some sites, though they don’t get the traffic John Chow does.

Jonathan Dave, maybe check out some anger management. NJC is just one of my blogs. As such I get more traffic because of the name and I have fun doing it.

  9. Not John Chow April 14, 2008 6:49 pm

Wade, so far I am seeing a steady increase. I think there is a curiosity about the name. That will probably fade with time but, by then maybe I can pick up a few subscribers.

Well, its not like i’m in volcanic anger, but everytime i run in to a blog like this really makes me laugh my ass off. Cutting Mr.John Cow traffic and making a tunnel to your blog. I’m not a supporter of Mr John Chow but for my personal view, this is not professional at all.

Good job, I’ll have to do it again some day. I just want you to let me know if John Chow will decide to take you off the list. I noticed that the first time I became a top commentator on his blog. Anyway, nice idea. I was first, though, ;) hehe

    Jonathan,

I admit it is a little parasitic! However, John Chow himself has given me the idea. He is not shy about using slightly questionable ideas to make a buck. After all he is Mr. Black Hat.

Of curse, I think it is all an act to keep the traffic flowing.

Professional? I havn’t found too many blogs that I would call professional. I think blogs and the internet are the wild, wild, west. Anything goes and usually does.

  13. Jonathan Dave April 15, 2008 8:02 am

Traffic flowing is indeed the best part of this kinda parasitic act. But Mr Not John Chow, it doesn’t matter how many professionals blogs out there listed in the web. I’m clearly stating that the domain name of yours is not professional at all dude. Its something like you seem not to understand at all. Im not throwing any negatives thoughts on you. If web is wild wild west, than you should be trying to be professional dude.

Let us know about how much traffic you have received from these three blogs.

  15. Not John Chow April 15, 2008 10:28 am

I think we all take ourselves too seriously at times. Not John Chow likes to poke fun at ourselves and at our glorious leader John Chow. JC himself has been to this site and had a good chuckle. As far as domain names, I have several and this is just one. I think there is room for “serious” domains and not so serious ones.

Thanks for the debate, I have enjoyed our discussion.

I will give a full traffic report soon!

  17. Mark Wilson April 16, 2008 11:40 am

I was thinking about doing that as well. I don’t see a downside, you get the info from the site and get the free advertising of being in the top spot. win win.

I think I am going to put together a graph showing my traffic rise.
