Not John Chow Saves by Not Spending – Part 1 – Baja Fresh

Posted by Not John Chow | January 31, 2010 .

It isn’t how much money you make, its how much money you keep.

I have to admit that I hate packing lunches.  If I do pack a lunch I usually end up leaving it on the counter on the way out of the house.  If I remember the lunch, I usually forget to grab my computer or my work badge.

I have often found that I can spend less than five dollars on lunch if I take a closer look around town.

Baja Fresh has an option that I have found reasonable.

I order the the soup! It is a chicken tortilla soup. While I wait I munch on some of the free chips and salsa.  Here is a picture of the chips, sauce, salsa (mostly tomatoes), hot peppers and if you want some cilantro.  I drink water with it because its free and it is better for you.

When the soup arrives I load it up with crumbled up chips and tomatoes.

When I am done with the soup I get a refill on the chips and throw them into the bowl.  Then I add more tomatoes and sauce.  All of this adds up to $3.66 which includes the tax.

If soup is not your thing then come back on a Tuesday with a friend.  On Tuesdays you can get two chicken burritos for six dollars.

Either way lunch is under five dollars.

What do you do to save money?

Baja fresh is amazing. The locations near my residence(s) shut down though, so I don’t go often at all anoymore.

Nice tips. Thanks, I will put the chip request into practice. On the cup, I found that if I kept it in the car it wouldn’t be clean, if I washed it I would forget to bring it. My solution? Drink water!

    I have a suggestion.
$1 – Extra Chips – when they scoop the chips, ask the guy to scoop some more. They gladly do that.
    $1 – Refill if you’ve purchased $2 cup

Get $2 survey coupons each time you purchase. You can get a burrito and a large drink under $5. lol

    Great post.

Sometimes I go to the grocery store near work and by lettuce, spinich, carrots, and tomatoes and make myself salad for a few days. That is a great way to save.

I work on a building site, and we all take our home made salads to work. I reckon not having to buy lunch and stuff saves me about $50+ a week.
