Crossing the Plateau

Posted by Not John Chow | July 14, 2008 .

I could complain about not having enough time.  I could complain about not having enough money.  I could complain about the competition being too tough. I could face reality.

The truth is that it is not about time.  We all have the same time available to us.  We each set our priorities and go about using our time accordingly.  If I never learned how to play the guitar it is because I learned to speak Spanish instead or I studied for my college exams or I decided to work more to get ahead in another way.  It is true that I value taking care of my family by putting food on the table, providing health insurance, and some extra money for other essentials and non-essentials but, that is still a choice; a priority. So, it is not about time.

It is not about money.  Oh sure, money can help but, often it is the case, and most definitely it is my case, that I had money that I invested or squandered poorly (yes, I know "squander poorly" is redundant).  Having money or having more money is often just another priority.  If we look around us we can often see money that we did not go after for one reason or another.  If we think about it we make money choices every day. We decide to go out for lunch or pack our lunch. We decide to drive our car rather than walk or bike to a local destination.  We decide to take art classes instead of accounting. These are all choices based on priorities.

Competition? It is not about the competition. If you want to succeed, you need to make it a priority.  You need to set goals to succeed. You need to pick a direction and go.  Learn what you need to learn, do what you need to do and focus on what is important.  It really is true, "you can do whatever you put your mind to."

I began this blog in November 2007. I wanted to explore the world of making money online. I knew/know that I have knowledge and experience that is of value and can be applied to a wide range of situations.  I have applied (prioritized) enough time and energy (a little money too) to get this blog up and running.  I have had worked to get modest subscribers and modest traffic numbers and enough monthly income to pay for my hosting bill(Paying your hosting bill is NOT making money online.  It is a start though).  My forward/upward progress has stalled.  I have reached a plateau or a wall of sorts.

Now it is time to Cross the Plateau.

I can see the horizon of my dreams.  I only need to set out on my quest.  But first I need to decide to make the journey.  I need to plan the trip.  I need to make it a priority.

I have, of course, already decided to realize my dreams.  What I have not decided is what higher level priority needs to be lowered to make it possible.  That is where I am at now.  That is where I struggle today.

What about you?
Do you know what you want? Do you have your life prioritized?  Are you moving toward your dreams?

I am sorry to hear that this site is not doing so well, even with John Chow talking about it on his site and the success with John Cow. Good luck to you in the future.

I’m glad you took this way. Refining your blog, filtering your goals, and deciding to go on. Congratulations. Good luck.

About your question, yes, I have my life prioritized, I ‘m making TODO lists, and they finish quite fast, so this means my goals see the light in a short period of time.

If you are an organized person, you will make it. That is keep this blog alive. Show John Chow that, even if you are not John Chow, you can succeed ;)

I have to totally empathize with you. The difference is, with me, I LITERALLY don’t have the money, and barely have the time. I wanted to comment on your last post, but was too lazy to get around to it.

What would the world be like without NotJohnChow? Just a world with John Chows.

You know what? That’s poorly stated…I need to restate that…

It’s nice to know there are other folks in the same position (or similar) to me, fighting for time and money to actually realize a goal. Frankly, I wish I had the support of the folks here, but I’m pretty much going at this on my own, working a full-time (plus 20-40 hrs overtime) week on a night shift, only getting about 30 minutes per day to dedicate to my project.

As for the guitar, go for it. It’s not that difficult…just make noises until it sounds good to you.

All I can really say is keep rocking. It will happen for you.

    Love your blog.

For me, blogging is all about the money. I have bought my domain and hosting for 2 years then I would not make money from it.
