Castro Steps Down & Castro Steps Up

Posted by Not John Chow | February 19, 2008 .

Fidel has “retired” and Raul is next in line to take over. Does this mean anything significant? Probably not. Cuba will not really be free to move forward until the Castro Clan lets go of its hold on Cuba or the USA gives up and finally agrees to talks with Raul.

Is the ball in our court? Apparently, there are multiple balls in multiple courts but, I think that the USA holding to our antiqued position on Cuba doesn’t help the people of Cuba.

Castro came to power in 1958 when dictator Batista was overthrown. In 1965 Castro became the dictator and turned Cuba into a Communist country. In 2006 he transferred his responsibilities to his younger brother Raúl Castro due to his poor health. And today, February 19, 2008, he was stepping down due to health issues.

With Cuba only 90 miles off the Flordia Keys, Cuba and the USA could enjoy great benefits if we could only find a common ground.
